Indian Stock Market Ends Lower as Sensex and Nifty Extend Four-Day Losing Streak

Mumbai, Oct 23: Indian equity markets remained under pressure on Friday, with the Sensex and Nifty closing lower for the fourth consecutive session as geopolitical uncertainty kept investors cautious. Continued selling in broader markets, particularly mid-cap and small-cap stocks, reflected growing risk aversion, while weakness in metal, real estate and public sector banking shares weighed on overall performance.

The BSE Sensex fell 125.56 points, or 0.17%, to close at 73,123.83. The NSE Nifty 50 declined 87.65 points, or 0.39%, to settle at 22,600.00.

Mid-Cap and Small-Cap Stocks Face Steeper Declines

Selling pressure was more pronounced beyond the benchmark indices. The Nifty MidCap 100 dropped 2.21%, while the Nifty SmallCap 100 declined 2.94%, indicating that investors remained cautious about taking risks in the broader market.

Metal, real estate and public sector banking stocks were among the weakest performers. Shriram Finance and JSW Steel were among the major laggards in the Nifty 50, adding to the pressure on the benchmark index.

Information technology stocks showed greater resilience than other major sectors. The Nifty IT index recorded the smallest decline among the sectoral indices, offering limited support amid widespread selling.

Nifty 50 Support Levels in Focus

The Nifty’s recovery from its intraday low suggested some buying interest around the 22,400–22,500 range. However, its closing level of 22,600 indicated that the market remains vulnerable to further volatility.

Market analysts consider 22,500 an important near-term support level. If the index holds above this mark, a recovery towards 22,800–22,900 may be possible. A sustained break below 22,500 could expose the market to further declines towards 22,300 and 22,200.

A sustained close above 22,900 would provide a stronger signal that the current selling pressure is beginning to ease.

Global Uncertainty Keeps Investors Cautious

Geopolitical tensions continued to influence investor sentiment, overshadowing individual stock developments and limiting buying interest. Global inflation trends and the monetary policy decisions of major central banks are also expected to remain important factors for equity markets.

The balance between inflation control and economic growth could influence global investment flows, market liquidity and risk appetite in the coming sessions.

Earnings and Valuations to Guide Investment Decisions

With markets facing continued uncertainty, investors are likely to focus on companies with stable earnings, strong fundamentals and reasonable valuations. Business performance, sector-specific developments and the outlook for future growth may become increasingly important in identifying opportunities.

The latest session highlights the uneven nature of the market decline, with broader indices facing greater pressure than their frontline counterparts. Until investor confidence improves and the market establishes stronger support levels, cautious trading and selective stock movements are likely to remain key features of the Indian equity market.
