Sensex Falls 353 Points as IT and Energy Stocks Weigh on Markets; Auto, Banking Shares Offer Support

Mumbai, Oct 28: Indian stock markets ended lower on Wednesday as selling pressure in information technology and energy shares weighed on benchmark indices. However, renewed buying in automobile and banking stocks helped the Sensex and Nifty recover from their intraday lows, limiting the overall losses.

The BSE Sensex closed at 73,246, declining 353 points after falling to an intraday low of 72,604. The NSE Nifty settled at 22,699, down 51 points, after recovering from its session low of 22,498.

The session reflected a mixed market environment, with investors shifting towards select sectors even as weakness in heavyweight stocks kept the benchmark indices under pressure.

Auto and Banking Stocks Cushion Market Losses

Automobile stocks emerged as the strongest performers among major sectors, with the Nifty Auto index rising 1.5%. Banking shares also attracted buying interest, helping the Bank Nifty gain 0.5%.

Larsen & Toubro, Apollo Hospitals, Trent and SBI Life Insurance were among the leading gainers, providing support during the second half of the session.

However, losses in heavyweight stocks limited the recovery. Infosys, Reliance Industries and ONGC were among the major laggards, adding pressure to the benchmark indices.

The contrasting performance across sectors indicated that investors were not withdrawing from the market uniformly but were showing greater selectivity in their buying decisions.

IT and Oil & Gas Shares Drag Indices Lower

Information technology and energy stocks remained under pressure throughout the session. The Nifty IT and Oil & Gas indices each declined around 2%, while the FMCG index slipped 0.6%.

Weakness in these sectors offset gains in automobile and banking shares, preventing the benchmark indices from moving into positive territory.

The performance of heavyweight companies remained particularly important for the market’s direction, as losses in major constituents can outweigh gains in several other stocks.

Midcap and Smallcap Stocks Outperform

Broader markets showed greater resilience than the frontline indices. The Nifty Midcap index advanced 0.5%, while the Nifty SmallCap index gained 0.8%.

The gains suggested that buying interest remained present in selected mid-sized and smaller companies despite the weakness in the Sensex and Nifty.

For investors, however, broader-market gains do not necessarily signal a sustained recovery. Company earnings, valuations and overall market sentiment remain important considerations when assessing individual stocks.

Nifty Trades Within a Key Support and Resistance Range

From a technical perspective, the Nifty continues to consolidate within the 22,400–22,800 range. The 22,500 level remains an important support area, while 22,800 is acting as a key resistance level.

The index’s recovery from its intraday low showed that buyers were willing to enter the market at lower levels. However, the negative closing indicates that buying was not strong enough to reverse the day’s losses.

A sustained move above 22,800 could improve near-term sentiment, while a decisive break below 22,500 may expose the market to further weakness. Until a clearer trend emerges, investors are likely to remain attentive to sectoral movements and changes in market momentum.

Investors Focus on Selective Buying

Wednesday’s trading session highlighted the importance of sector-specific performance in determining the direction of Indian equities. Gains in automobiles and banking helped contain losses, but continued selling in IT and energy shares kept the benchmark indices in negative territory.

For long-term investors, market declines may offer opportunities to reassess fundamentally strong businesses, provided their valuations and financial prospects remain attractive. Short-term traders, meanwhile, may continue to face volatility as the market tests important technical levels.

The market’s next direction will depend on whether buying support broadens across sectors or selling pressure in heavyweight stocks continues to dominate trading. For now, the mixed performance points to a cautious environment in which disciplined stock selection remains important.
