
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address has reinforced India’s ambition to emerge as a major global player in semiconductor manufacturing, with industry leaders viewing the announcement as a sign that the country’s chip strategy is moving from ecosystem building towards global competitiveness.
Addressing the nation on August 15, Modi highlighted India’s progress in semiconductor manufacturing and announced plans for another five to eight advanced semiconductor facilities over the next seven to eight years. Industry experts said the roadmap could strengthen India’s position in the global chip supply chain and accelerate the development of a domestic electronics ecosystem.
The semiconductor push is increasingly becoming a key pillar of India’s broader industrial and technology strategy. The government has been supporting chip manufacturing, assembly, testing, packaging and design through the India Semiconductor Mission and related policy initiatives, with the objective of reducing import dependence while creating globally competitive capabilities.
Industry observers said the latest announcements are significant because semiconductor leadership requires more than individual manufacturing plants. A competitive ecosystem needs advanced fabrication capabilities, packaging and testing infrastructure, domestic design expertise, reliable supply chains, skilled manpower and strong research and development capabilities.
India has already begun moving towards commercial semiconductor production. The government has approved multiple semiconductor projects, while companies are establishing facilities across different parts of the country. The expansion is expected to support demand from sectors such as automobiles, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, consumer electronics, defence and renewable energy.
The industry response also reflects growing confidence in India’s ability to become an important alternative within global semiconductor supply chains. Geopolitical tensions and supply-chain diversification have encouraged multinational companies to look for additional manufacturing locations beyond established hubs.
For India, the opportunity extends beyond manufacturing. The country already has a substantial pool of semiconductor design talent, and strengthening the link between chip design, intellectual property, fabrication and electronics manufacturing could allow Indian companies to capture a larger share of the global value chain.
The challenge now lies in execution. Building advanced semiconductor facilities requires substantial capital, specialised technology, dependable infrastructure and highly skilled talent. Sustained policy support and close collaboration between government, industry, academia and global technology companies will therefore be critical.
Industry experts believe that if the planned investments translate into operational facilities and a deeper domestic ecosystem, India could move closer to its long-term objective of becoming a trusted global hub for semiconductor design and manufacturing.
