New Delhi, Oct 13: Indian equity markets staged a strong recovery on Tuesday, with benchmark indices registering sharp gains as buying interest returned to the market, led by information technology stocks. The BSE Sensex jumped 1,109.10 points, or 1.54%, to close at 73,033.78, while the NSE Nifty 50 advanced 358.60 points, or 1.60%, to settle at 22,721.95.

Stock Market Today: Sensex Surges 1,109 Points, Nifty Closes Above 22,700

The rally followed a weak previous session and reflected renewed investor interest in select heavyweight stocks, particularly in the IT sector. Improved sentiment around quarterly earnings also supported buying across several sectors.

IT Stocks Lead the Market Rally

Information technology stocks emerged as the biggest contributors to Tuesday’s gains after HCL Technologies reported quarterly results that encouraged investors. The Nifty IT index climbed more than 5%, marking its strongest single-day performance in over 17 months.

HCL Technologies shares rose 8.4%, while Tata Consultancy Services gained 6.8%. The gains lifted sentiment across the IT sector and helped drive the broader market higher.

Investors are closely tracking quarterly earnings for indications of corporate performance, demand conditions and business outlook. Results from major companies are expected to influence sector-specific movements in the coming sessions.

Broad-Based Buying Supports Indices

The market rally extended beyond IT stocks, with most major sectoral indices ending the session in positive territory. Capital goods, consumer durables, automobile and financial services stocks attracted buying interest, contributing to the overall recovery.

The gains reflected improved participation across several segments of the market, although performance remained uneven among individual stocks and sectors. Mid-cap stocks also advanced, while small-cap stocks recorded comparatively modest gains.

The recovery offered some relief to investors after recent volatility, with market participants looking for signs of sustained buying support.

Rupee Recovery Offers Additional Support

The Indian rupee strengthened for a second consecutive session, trading around ₹95.28 against the US dollar. The recovery followed measures by the Reserve Bank of India aimed at easing pressure on the domestic currency.

Currency movements remain an important factor for equity investors because they influence import costs, inflation expectations, foreign investment flows and the earnings outlook for companies with overseas exposure.

However, global uncertainties and elevated crude oil prices continue to pose risks for the domestic market. Sustained increases in oil prices can raise India’s import bill and add pressure to inflation and the current account.

Investors Track Policy Signals and Global Developments

Market participants are also monitoring policy-related developments and comments from government officials. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has indicated that the government is open to hearing stakeholder views on capital gains tax and securities transaction tax, though no policy change has been announced.

Investors will continue to assess corporate earnings, foreign institutional investment flows, currency movements and global market trends before taking fresh positions.

Market Outlook

Tuesday’s strong rebound brought renewed optimism to Dalal Street, with gains in IT heavyweights providing a significant boost to the benchmark indices. The recovery also highlighted the role of quarterly earnings and currency movements in shaping short-term market sentiment.

Going forward, investors are likely to remain selective, focusing on company performance, valuations and developments in the global economy. Crude oil prices, foreign fund flows and geopolitical tensions will remain important factors influencing market direction.

While Tuesday’s gains provided relief after recent weakness, the sustainability of the recovery will depend on continued buying interest and supportive domestic and global cues.
